A Tradition of Innovation1942Pittsburgh Coke & Chemical Company, Inc. (Calgon Carbon's predecessor), pioneers the development of coal-based granular activated carbon for use in military protection masks. 1955The "Pittsburgh Pulse Bed" system is introduced – the first activated carbon system for sugar decolorization. 1960The Activated Carbon Division of Pittsburgh Coke and Chemical pioneers the use of granular activated carbon (GAC) in drinking water treatment. 1962The Activated Carbon Division reaches a major milestone, when 40,000 pounds of bituminous coal-based GAC are installed for the Virginia-American Water Co., a subsidiary of the American Water Works Service Company, setting a new benchmark for drinking water quality. 1965Pittsburgh Activated Carbon Company (formerly Pittsburgh Coke & Chemical), now manufacturing granular activated carbon for use in the removal of tastes, odors, colors and other impurities from liquids, and charcoal filters for cigarettes, is acquired by Calgon Corporation. 1967Calgon Corporation is reorganized into six autonomous divisions, including the Pittsburgh Activated Carbon Company, responsible for its own marketing and manufacturing. 1968Calgon Corporation merges with Merck & Co., Inc. 1970Chemviron, S.A, headquartered in Brussels, is established to market water pollution control systems, products and engineering services in Europe. 1972To provide a solution to industry's water pollution control problems, a new service concept is introduced to the marketplace, including the supply and maintenance of Company-owned equipment for wastewater treatment systems on the customer's site. 1978To service customers in Japan, Korea and Taiwan, a joint venture is formed with Mitsui Chemicals, Inc. and Mitsui & Co., Ltd. 1985Calgon Carbon, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Merck and Co., Inc., is acquired by its management through a leveraged buyout. 1987Calgon Carbon completes initial public offering of common stock. 1988Calgon Carbon acquires charcoal production operation in Germany. 1990Through acquisition, Calgon Carbon establishes its Vara International Division to provide customized engineered systems for solvent recovery and volatile organic compound abatement. 1991Calgon Carbon is listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), trading under the symbol CCC. 1993Thames Water Utilities, Ltd., in the U.K. grants Calgon Carbon exclusive rights to market its new Sandwich Filter technology for the removal of pesticides and other organic compounds from drinking water. 1995Calgon Carbon introduces Centaur®, a revolutionary family of activated carbon products specially manufactured to exhibit not only absorptive capabilities, but also enhanced catalytic properties. 1996Supplementing its core technology of activated carbon, Calgon Carbon becomes the world leader in advanced oxidation by acquiring the perox-pure business operations of Vulcan Peroxidation Systems, Inc., (Tucson, Arizona), and Solarchem Enterprises, Inc., (Toronto, Ontario, Canada). 1996Calgon Carbon also acquires Advanced Separation Technologies Incorporated™ (Lakeland, Florida), a leading worldwide supplier of separation process system that employs proprietary continuous ion exchange and continuous chromotography technologies; and Charcoal Cloth (International) Ltd., a British manufacturer of activated carbon in cloth form. 1997Calgon Carbon forms a Singapore-based marketing subsidiary, Calgon Carbon Asia, serving customers in Korea, Taiwan, the People's Republic of China, Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand and India. 1998Calgon Carbon introduces the Sentinel® UV disinfection system for controlling Cryptosporidium in drinking water, and the first cost-effective solution to eliminate perchlorate from drinking water: the ISEP® continuous ion exchange system for perchlorate removal, and the ISEP+® catalytic system for perchlorate destruction. 2000Calgon Carbon successfully miniaturizes its proven industrial technologies for consumer applications, and launches three new consumer products. 2001Calgon Carbon announces start-up of United States' largest UV Disinfection system for drinking water at Westview Water's Neville Island Treatment Plant. 2001Calgon Carbon Corporation awarded a contract from a water utility in Southern California to design and provide its unique ISEP+® and Rayox® Ultraviolet/Oxidation systems for the removal and on-site destruction of perchlorate, N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), and 1,4 Dioxane from groundwater. 2002Calgon Carbon awarded additional patent for technology to protect Drinking Water from Cryptosporidium. 2002Calgon Carbon Corporation expands in Asia – starts up manufacturing plant in China. 2002Calgon Carbon Corporation and Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation of Tokyo, Japan have agreed to form a joint venture partnership that will produce and sell activated carbon and related services throughout Japan. 2003John Stanik elected President and CEO of Calgon Carbon. 2003Intellectual property office of New Zealand grants Calgon Carbon Corporation patent for preventing replication of Cryptosporidium. 2003Calgon Carbon awarded 2nd U.S. patent for UV Treatment of Cryptosporidium in drinking water. 2003CCC leads the market in Groundwater Remediation for Perchlorate Treatment with 12 sites, treating 75 million gallons of water per day. 2004Calgon Carbon Corporation acquires Waterlink Specialty Products, known as Barnebey Sutcliffe in the United States, and Sutcliffe Speakman in Europe, to enhance capabilities in carbon reactivation, impregnation and in on-site services. 2005Calgon Carbon Corporation and C. Gigantic Carbon (Gigantic), headquartered in Bangkok, Thailand formed a joint-venture company to provide carbon reactivation services to the Thailand market. The new company, Calgon Carbon (Thailand) Ltd. will begin operation immediately. 2006Calgon Carbon Awarded Contract for Drinking Water Treatment in South Korea. 2007 Calgon Carbon Awarded Contract for Drinking Water Treatment in China. 2007Calgon Carbon Awarded Carbon Cloth Contract from Military. 2008 Calgon Carbon Featured on the History Channel's Modern Marvels. |
