Calgon Carbon Corporation Expands in Asia

PITTSBURGH, PA  –  05/09/2003

Calgon Carbon Corporation (NYSE: CCC), a global leader in activated carbon for air and water purification, is increasing its commitment to Asian markets with a recent investment in two state-of-the-art manufacturing and service facilities in China: Datong Carbon Company Limited (DCC) and Calgon Carbon Company Tianjin Limited (CCT). This expansion will enable Calgon Carbon Corporation to better serve both new and existing customers throughout Asia.

The first facility, Datong Carbon Company Limited, located in Datong, Shanxi Province, a coal-mining region, is a cooperative enterprise between Calgon Carbon and a Chinese partner to produce bituminous-coal-based granular activated carbon (GAC). Utilizing Calgon Carbon’s proven technological expertise, which includes an agglomeration process, DCC can consistently produce activated carbon that is the highest quality with high porosity and maximum hardness. Another key benefit is that having a more readily available raw material supply will further increase Calgon Carbon’s competitiveness in a growing Asian market for activated carbon.

The second facility, Calgon Carbon Company Tianjin Limited, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Calgon Carbon Corporation. CCT is equipped with a sizing, screening and packaging operation, large storage warehouse, and a full-service laboratory complete with state of the art laboratory instruments. Accordingly, the high-quality GAC produced by DCC as well as outsourced products of different materials, sizes, and shapes will be processed, tested and packaged at CCT for supply to customers in Asia and around the world. CCT’s Quality Assurance Lab will ensure that customer specifications are met before the finished products are packaged and shipped to customers.

CCT’s product and lab support system includes sophisticated enterprise software for efficient business processes. This specialized software optimizes inventory management, administers quality assurance data and coordinates sales order handling and logistics. This system will help to enable CCT to provide fast, efficient turnaround of customer needs.

“We are genuinely excited about our growth potential in Asia,” said James G. Fishburne, senior vice president of Calgon Carbon Corporation. “Our cooperative efforts with both DCC and CCT will enable Calgon Carbon to provide our Asian customers with the highest quality activated carbon products and technologies, supported by state-of-the-art lab testing and unmatched customer service. We think that’s a winning combination.”

Calgon Carbon Corporation, headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is a global leader in services and solutions for making air and water cleaner and safer. The company employs approximately 1,000 people at 14 operating facilities and 11 sales and service centers worldwide.
