Calgon Carbon Corporation Releases 2014 Global Sustainability Report

PITTSBURGH, PA  –  10/08/2015

Calgon Carbon Corporation (NYSE:CCC) released its second Sustainability Report highlighting the various environmental stewardship and social responsibility initiatives the company advanced in 2014 and key performance metrics for ongoing, long-term sustainability goals.

Calgon Carbon is a global leader in innovative solutions, high quality products and services designed to protect human health and the environment from harmful contaminants in water and air.  As a leading manufacturer of activated carbon, with broad capabilities in ultraviolet light disinfection, Calgon Carbon provides purification solutions for drinking water, wastewater, pollution abatement and a variety of industrial and commercial manufacturing processes.

The 2014 Sustainability Report provides information about performance in our key focus areas: Environmental Stewardship, Enhancing our Workplace, Community Support and Products and Life Cycle. The report also includes Calgon Carbon’s Environmental, Health, Safety and Security Policy, which embodies the Guiding Principles of Responsible Care®. The report, published last week, is available at sustainability.calgoncarbon.com.

As a highlight, the report details metrics which quantify the sustainable impact of Calgon Carbon’s reactivation process as compared to the production of virgin activated carbon, including:

  • Using up to 98% less water
  • Consuming up to 40% less energy
  • Reducing the production of Greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80%

Reactivation is one of the company’s core operations, which recycles spent carbon for reuse. The positive metrics are a driving force for Calgon Carbon to continue to promote reactivation services as a sustainable option for customers.

According to Randy Dearth, Calgon Carbon’s chairman, president and CEO, the company recognizes the need to ensure that it is adequately managing its environmental impact, which is accomplished by continuing to evaluate and refine the way the company collects information and data.

“By recording and reporting our sustainable impact, we now know what questions to ask, what to look for, and what tools to use to effectively manage our efforts. This is, in my opinion, a huge step towards a more effective sustainable practice, and enables us to move forward with confidence as we begin to modify our practices.”

Calgon Carbon’s second Sustainability Report also places a heavy focus on Enhancing the Workplace through safety initiatives to improve performance. “Our employees are vital to our operations and we will provide the safety programs and measures necessary to keep them safe,” says Abby Rubright, Calgon Carbon Sustainability & EHS Program Specialist. In 2014, the company enacted 3 areas of focused improvement with regards to safety:

  • Increased Communications & Awareness: Weekly safety newsletters issued globally, safety videos and creative messaging, the formation of an executive safety committee, site safety talks, and a safety award program;
  • Behavior Based Safety Program: A global, standardized behavior based safety program that requires employees of all levels to make personal and positive safety contacts and task observations;
  • SafeStart® Training: A formal program and process for developing personal safety skills critical to a safe working environment.
