About Solvent Recovery, Distillation, and VOC Abatement

Calgon Carbon Corporation's Vara Technology systems are:
  • Custom designed
  • Available in a wide range of flows and configurations depending on space constraints
  • Pre-assembled and skid-mounted for easy, fast installation that minimizes field construction costs
  • Complete with state-of-the-art Programmable Logic Control (PLC), including remote monitoring
  • Cost-effective and environmentally compliant
Our family of systems include:

Solvent Recovery System

Vara Technologies of Calgon Carbon Corporation provides the most complete, reliable and cost-effective adsorption systems that recycle and reuse up to 99+% of solvents while still exceeding regulatory standards for removal of VOC from industrial emissions. This result directly benefits customers by increasing profitability by virtually eliminating solvent expense through recovery.

The natural method of solvent recovery is adsorption, which relies on attractive forces between solvent molecules and a selected adsorbent, either zeolite or activated carbon. The solvent is removed from the air or process stream and is then recovered by directly heating the adsorbent and using this energy to overcome the intermolecular attractive forces. The resulting vapor stream is condensed allowing for recovery and reuse of the solvent. This process takes place automatically via a customized PLC-based control system.

Adsorption is the ideal VOC control solution for manufacturing processes that generate a solvent laden gas stream. This applies to a wide variety of industries such as the pharmaceutical and chemical, which utilize solvents in drying, coating, curing, and cleaning operations.

Further purification and separation can be provided through Vara Technologies expertise in the distillation field. Through the supply of distillation columns, air strippers, and membranes, Vara Technologies can provide the recovered product at the highest standards.

Advanced Distillation System

Advanced distillation systems are used to separate and recover high purity solvents suitable for reuse. Vara Technlogies of Calgon Carbon Corporation can provide both batch and continuous advanced distillation systems. These systems can be provided in conjunction with our stand-alone units or carbon adsorption/solvent recovery technology.

Vara Technologies distillation systems are the preferred choice by customers in the chemical, pharmaceutical, and other specialty industries around the world for recovery, recycle and reuse of solvents for applications ranging from solvent mixtures to solvent contaminated wastewater.

Vara Technologies supplies complete extractive and azeotropic multi-component distillation systems to separate and purify solvent mixtures.

A range of distillation capabilities can be provided to include:

  • Extraction columns
  • Solvent/solvent separation
  • Solvent/water separation
  • Steamstripping columns
  • Stripping/rectification columns
  • Vacuum columns
  • Wastewater treatment

VOC Abatement Systems

VOC Abatement Systems treat air or gas containing volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Vara Technologies provides several cost-effective alternatives to meet customers' specific needs.

  • Regenerable Carbon Adsorption System
The versatility of Vara Technologies adsorption technology offers the most appropriate system for your application. In applications where chlorinated solvents are present, adsorption is an effective manner in which to avoid the problems associated with oxidation. This includes dioxin and acid gas formation and the high equipment costs associated with special materials of construction requirements.
  • CADRE® System
The CADRE® system treats large volume gas streams containing low concentrations of VOCs. This is a cost-effective solution, up to 99%, for the removal and destruction of hydrocarbons, including paraffins, aromatics, ketones, and esters for a variety of industrial processes and environmental applications. The CADRE® system combines fixed-bed regenerable adsorption (activated carbon or zeolite) and thermal oxidation technology into a single system to provide an efficient VOC abatement alternative for high flow applications. This system is ideal for both batch applications or those in which VOC levels vary. The CADRE® system can automatically accommodate these fluctuations and potentially lower operating costs.
  • Revolver® Z
The Revolver® Z system is built around a zeolite rotor technology and is coupled with a thermal oxidizer to provide a low cost yet highly efficient VOC control system. The Revolver® Z system continuously adsorbs/removes VOCs from large air streams. While the zeolite wheel rotates, VOCs are removed with hot air. The resulting desorbed organic compounds are then oxidized to CO2 and H2O in a thermal oxidizer.
Some industries that use this technology are paint spray booths, semiconductor, coatings, remediation, chemical and aerospace.
  • Thermal Oxidation
A complete range of thermal oxidation systems for VOC destruction can also be provided. These systems include Thermal Oxidizers, Recuperative Thermal Oxidizers, Regenerative Thermal Oxidizers, and Catalytic Thermal Oxidizers.
