Calgon Carbon and Harrington Industrial Plastics Complete Strategic Alliance

PITTSBURGH, PA  –  07/21/2003

Calgon Carbon Corporation (NYSE: CCC) announced today that Harrington Industrial Plastics, LLC and Calgon Carbon Corporation have formed a strategic alliance that will allow Calgon Carbon to offer several of Harrington’s Environmental Engineering division’s biological and chemical scrubbing systems for odor control. Harrington’s patent-pending bio-scrubber system and horizontal cross-flow chemical scrubber system will be marketed by Calgon Carbon for use in the municipal wastewater market.

Calgon Carbon will offer Harrington’s products as stand-alone products and in combination with other Calgon Carbon technologies to provide clients with odor control solutions tailored to their specific needs. Under the agreement, Calgon Carbon will be the exclusive sales and marketing outlet for the municipal wastewater odor control market for both the Harrington bio-scrubber and horizontal chemical scrubber products in North America. These products will carry the names of both companies. Along with the products, Harrington will provide a variety of support services.

Bio-scrubbing is a technology for reducing emissions of hydrogen sulfide and ammonia, odor causing compounds commonly found at municipal wastewater treatment facilities. Bio-scrubbers can also remove many of the odorous organic sulfur compounds found at municipal wastewater facilities and are considered an environmentally friendly solution to odor problems. Harrington’s bio-scrubbers have a number of innovative features that result in advantages over competing bio-scrubber systems, including having a smaller system footprint, lower operating costs, and more predictable performance. Harrington’s horizontal cross-flow chemical scrubber can be used with a variety of chemicals to removal a wide range of odorous compounds. Harrington’s horizontal scrubber provides an effective system coupled with a small system footprint and low profile, allowing it to fit into places where competitive systems cannot.

“Harrington’s systems are a significant addition to our odor control product portfolio, enabling us to provide our customers with a wide variety of solutions to their odor problems,” said James G. Fishburne, senior vice president of Calgon Carbon Corporation. “This alliance is another step towards becoming the number one odor control solutions provider in the municipal wastewater market.”

“This alliance allows two industry leaders to integrate leading edge technology and multiple solutions to odor control problems,” said William McCollum, CEO of Harrington Industrial Plastics, LLC. “Calgon Carbon’s unique advantage in sales and marketing will allow Harrington to pursue our primary objective in designing and manufacturing the finest non-corrosive equipment available.”

Harrington Industrial Plastics, headquartered in Chino, California, is the largest industrial plastics stocking distributor in the United States. Harrington’s Environmental Engineering division has been involved in the design, manufacture, and sale of environmental equipment for over 35 years.
